Typography as a discipline is nowadays mostly considered as authorial, and in common practice we usually encounter an approach where the authors of fonts carefully guard and hide their know-how and do not share workflows/"unfinished" files. This creates a kind of mysterious and impenetrable membrane around the whole field, in which there is distrust of others and a pervasive fear of loosing one's own "originality". All of this is done to favour their position on the market and to accumulate financial and social capital. The bachelor's thesis presents various problems pervading typographic practice, draws conclusions on how these problems can be combated, and "humbly" invites typographers to collaborate, be community-minded, share knowledge and ideas, and presents the limits/negatives of existing alternatives. This brings to light the author's motivations for creating the inprogress.type platform and how this tool can help to re-set existing paradigms. Inprogress.type is a platform/online tool for sharing, collectively designing and/or incrementally re-designing open-source fonts, visualizing and archiving the whole process, breaking the boundaries between author, designer and end-user, and creating a digital environment helpful for self-education of students and laics. This tool is based on the lack of alternatives in the online space.
